Waist - Hip - Ratio

The waist-hip-ratio calculates the relation between hip and waist circumference and tells you if you are rather an "apple" or "pear" type.

 The apple type:

Apple

The apple type has normal shoulders and gains weight in the stomach ,chest and neck regions.

 The pear type:

Pear

Has narrow shoulders and is relatively thin around the chest. The waist is normal. The pear type gains weight at the waist and upper thighs.

The pear type is common more often for women and the  apple type for men. An  apple shaped overweight persn has a   greater risk of getting chronic disease complications with advance  of age.  Whereas the pear type overweight is less likely to get endocrine diseases, since the fatty tissues  on the hips are  protective of the inner body organs thus the risk of hypertension, heart and circulatory diseases is less. Still some people may have a mixed body type – large hips and fat around the belly area – Most likely to happen to women after menopause.  These individuals are prone to develop more chronic health complications because of the reduced estrogen level in the female menopausal body system.

 How to calculate your Waist-Hip-Ratio:

The waist-hip ratio is an indicator of body shape, which can be statistically related to the risk of various health problems and diseases. Ideally,
, the waist-hip ratio should be below 1.0 in men and below 0.85 in women, as these levels indicate obesity and are associated with greater health risksWaist. Please note that you risk health problems if your Waist-Hip-Ratio is much higher than the indicated figures.
Measure your waist at the narrowest point of your relaxed stomach. Your hips are measured on the widest circumference. Enter both measurements in the fields in centimeters. Get your Waist-Hip-Ratio by clicking the button.

It is not only important to look at your healthy weight range on the profile, but also to take into account where you carry that weight. Regional patterns of fat deposit are controlled genetically and differ between, and among, men and women. It is generally accepted that, for most people, carrying extra weight around their middle ("apple shape") increases health risks more than carrying extra weight around their hips or thighs ("pear shape").Overall obesity, however, is still of greater risk than body fat store locations.

Important Note
In order to calculate a correct ratio, your waist and hip measurements should be taken at their narrowest and widest points respectively, that is, take the measuring tape and contour the diameter of the Navel ( the narrowest part above the stomach ) and the hip ( the largest part above the buttocks ).
